Clean
the Slate
I've written hundreds of poems through the years
On many subjects for dozens of ears
There are a few I promised to write for
Though I doubt they would still be keeping score
And so for one reason or another
Perhaps a handful or two of druthers
I never quite got around to the task
And they're no longer close enough to ask
It's highly unlikely we'll meet again
I don't know where they are or where they've been
But as a man who tries to keep his word
Their poem wasn't skipped it was just deferred
So if you knew me from some other time
And I promised to create you a rhyme
This is the poem you've been waiting to see
Along with a simple apology
Sorry it took so long to get it lined
And it may not be what you had in mind
But I thought it was time to end the wait
And I'm glad for the chance to clean the slate
