The premonition continued to plague him for many sleep cycles. It wasn’t something that he could explain or understand with any certainty, yet the nagging uneasiness persisted. It was more of a “gut feeling” than anything else but it remained in the back recesses of his mind like a dark, ominous cloud overhead in the distance during a picnic; ever drawing nearer. He told some of his fellow coworkers about his “Revelation of Doom” but they were all too busy being conscientious citizens and laborers to concern themselves with it. “Get back to work!”; they would always tell him. “We have many mouths to feed and construction projects to finish here at the colony instead of worrying about your mutant paranoia!”. As several days went by, this unsettling vision continued to grip him until it was more like an all consuming obsession. Over and over again he “experienced” the catastrophe with rapidly increasing intensity in his mind’s eyes and with each sleep cycle the sinister vision became a little clearer. An enormous object was going to fall from the sky and obliterate the apartment complex where many generations of his family and friends had grown up in. He sensed that many would die instantly, while others would suffocate from being trapped under the rubble because they couldn’t burrow themselves out to safety. Several catastrophes had occurred during his lifetime; like the flood that had drowned some of his family or the cave-in from poor workmanship a long time ago but he was sure that this would be THE END for all! Between building and gathering, he tried again to impress on his fellow workers how much danger they were all in but they continued with their duties unswayed and told him that they didn’t have time for his “fanciful delusions”. Even his relatives didn’t believe him. His lack of restful sleep soon began to affect the quality of his work and he was accused of not “pulling his own weight” around the complex. His family pleaded with him to stop promoting his “Crusade for Salvation” and start acting like a conscientious laborer. His intentions seemed hopeless and he began to wish that his “insanity” would go away before he was demoted all the way down the ranks to the lowest rung of their societal hierarchy. As would be expected from a consuming obsession of this magnitude, his dreams and visions continued to get stronger and clearer until they were all encompassing. Soon enough, he was indeed at the bottom of the “totem pole”. He could now see the object clearly in both his dreams and while fully conscious, as it fell from the heavens. It was even larger than he had previously thought and was unlike anything he had ever seen. It had many multicolored ridges and strange formations that held no understanding for him. “What could this strange object of destruction be?”; he pondered fearfully. “Could this be the ‘ARMAGEDDON’ that has been foretold from ancient times? Will there be an afterlife for any of us?” Upon waking from what he knew would be his final slumber, the vision was now complete. Filled with both the panic stricken fear of dark enlightenment and the mourningful sorrow of one whose words of warning were unheeded by all, he accepted the bleak future that he knew fate had in store for them. There was no escaping the cruel swipe of fate. He could ‘feel’ a series of earthquakes shortly before the object impacted the planet and could even imagine it’s thunderous explosion upon impact. The rmageddon of all would begin and end almost instantly with no survivors. Not far away, some kids were playing baseball on a vacant lot. The outfield team was trying to hold onto the lead and win the game in the final inning. The center fielder ran to intercept a pop fly and came to a firm, plopping halt where it made it’s descent. In the sand under his foot was the ant’s hill. His shoe print was all that was left of their “apartment”. With the loud slap of the ball making contact with the glove, the ant’s Armageddon was over. The prophecy had been fulfilled completely. |
