What am I?

I am the beginning, I am the end...
from the ascent to the descent.

From the rise to the fall.
I have witnessed all.

What am I?

No shape nor substance, nor common ground;
Many have searched but I can't be found.
I escape their grasp with hardly a sound.
When will they realize that I can't be bound?

In ancient times I was feared.
To Hollanders I am revered.
In a straw hut I have peered.
The dwelling of a swine has disappeared!

From Artctic cold to desert sands.
I've visited these and many other lands.

No matter where, I have the same effect.
I stir up things with reckless neglect.

Never caring what I do.
I could be harmful or helpful to you.
It's all the same for when I'm through.
I will have swept you away too!

I used to move vessels from East to West.
Putting Sailor's courage to the test.
I sank some ships and saved the rest.
but challenging man is what I like best.

Now I'm sure you know of me, the ellimination was simple.
What else could I be?

Here is the final rhyme....
I am the winds of time.....
