Play It Again Sam

Red eyed D.J. far and away in radioland
reaches for a single with a nicotine stained hand
he's got ice cold tacos and last weeks coffee
he's got a bag of escape stashed in a tomato can

In a resonant voice he deftly expounds
the advantage of buying a car at Cals in Morgantown
"And now for a song" says he, "from before your time"
He puts on the darling of a summer long gone
and finishes with a few obligatory lines
for this rats nest where he's spent so much of his time

He flips a switch, leans back in his creaking chair
and stares at the wall
"Lord" he mutters in a puff of smoke,
"is this all a stupid dream
or just a bad joke"

Aloft on electric piano wings
propelled by the beat of a drum
out through the air a miracle of modern man
flies far and away across the land
A knock on my door; now opened I see
with guitar in his pocket and moog on his sleeve
a well traveled minstrel smiling back at me

Hello old friend living still a life of sound
midnight confidante it's nice to see you again
You've a ghost to meet in this dusty room
where once a tender kiss was found

Among old bits of paper
under cast away pieces of time
there waits a tattered box of sleeping dreams
soon to feel the rhythm of your searching lines

Awakened now
and wished upon
I can see her smile it seems
and I feel the touch of her hand
as memories take in spirits shape
quiet flight beside a passing song

. ..I remember the soft touch of her eyes
where silence spoke when words could not
of emotions new and shimmering and mysterious
waiting for us deep within the nights star flecked mistiness

I remember our vibrant passion
enchanting the hot august air
I remember 'I love you' just newly found
forever our treasure and always true
as we whispered our summer full of goodnights
And 'I love you' desperate then
when in that last fading light
we cried.. .

 Now the song is over
now the song is done
As the radio talks of Pepsi's new generation
I stand, wrap my dreams around me
and step outside
I light a cigarette and look up at the sky
where the stars were many more
and so much brighter then
far and away
in radioland
